The Gaming Club brings students from both the Beren campus and Wilf campus together to relax and share in their fondness of one thing: games. The club was founded last year by Dori Berman (SCW ‘26) and Nathan Stern (YC ‘24). This year, the club, run by Dori Berman and Eitan Schulman (YC ‘25), gathers in-person to play all types of games, including video games, board games, and even to watch movies based on video games. Online, the club has an active group chat where members share memes, articles, and controversial opinions about certain games. This club will have something for anyone interested in gaming.
What is your club’s mission statement?
The Gaming Club’s mission is to unite students of all gaming backgrounds. No matter how diverse their gaming backgrounds are, we invite everyone to come and enjoy various gaming activities, including board games, card games, video games, and childhood classics.
Why is this club important?
Students work tirelessly [a]round the clock, completing assignments on time and studying for their upcoming exams, many times forgetting to leave some time for themselves to wind down and have some fun. Sometimes all you need is just a little break, and what better way to spend that break [then] by playing some amazing games with your colleagues and friends. These small breaks are important to our success as students here at YU, and all we want is to help everyone turn off their brain for a bit and play their favorite games.
What inspired you to get involved in/start the club?
One Shabbat, I (Dori) was playing a game called Cultivate with some friends, and while I was destroying my opponents/friends, I noticed how much fun we were all having. I realized that I wanted to do something like this during the week, not just on Shabbat. I wanted to create a space for students to come and just forget about life for a while, a place where you can just come and vibe. So I went and filled out the club application and then the next thing I knew we became an official club.
What was your favorite event from last semester?
My (Dori’s) favorite event from last semester has to be the Mario Kart tournament that we hosted. We had an amazing turnout of over twenty people. Everyone had an amazing time with a lot of healthy competition that had our club members on the edge of their seats. The top three competitors had the chance to win amazing prizes, got their pick of Mario Kart figurines, and obviously boasting rights. There was also pizza as a consolation prize for all those who weren’t lucky enough to win the tournament.
What events do you have planned for this semester?
We are going to be hosting a pizza and movie night and we will be showing a movie based on a video game. We left it up to the members of the club to vote on which movie they would want to watch, and they voted on Wreck it Ralph.
What is your advice to someone looking to get involved with the club?
Join our WhatsApp chat! It’s an open space to talk about all things gaming-related.
