Each month, the YU Observer aims to highlight one club available to the YU undergraduate community. For the March 2024 edition, the YU Observer is highlighting the Stern Sports Club.

Head(s): Naomi Rose, Rebecca Kalmar (Presidents)

Relevant Campus(es): Beren Campus

What is your club’s mission statement?

The Sports Club is a Stern club that allows Stern students of all athletic levels to play, watch, learn, and talk sports. We have community bonding events on-campus events, as well as off-campus, sports-related trips!

Why is this club important?

Before this club, there was a lack of community for Stern students who enjoyed sports, but didn’t necessarily have the opportunity or time to commit to being part of official University athletics. This club aims to create a space for casual fans, as well as student-athletes, to come together and bond over all things sports related!

What inspired you to get involved in/start the club?

The club was started by students Rebecca Kalmar and Vered Kaplan last year. As stated earlier, realizing the lack of a community for sports fans, specifically for girls at Stern College, the two got together to create this club and address the problems they saw.

What are some plans you have for this semester/future semesters?

At the end of March, we will be hosting a fun Sports Trivia Night! There will be a Kahoot with sports trivia questions ranging from beginner to advanced, and the winner will win a jersey of their choice from any sports team. We will be serving chicken wings and french fries. We are also currently working on creating an off-campus axe-throwing trip in April. We hope to take our club members to a baseball game, as well as just have a fun “chill” in Central Park, with perhaps some bike riding.

What is your advice for someone looking to get involved on campus?

Yeshiva University facilitates the process for anyone wanting to get involved on campus! If you see a club you are interested in, apply to be a board member, or reach out to one of the presidents! If you have an idea for a club, society, or publication that you think YU is lacking, all you need to do is get the required amount of signatures and apply for it. It’s so easy, and if granted, your club will get a budget per semester, and you can then work on creating events! I also honestly really like the new Campus Groups method, as it is even easier to see everything happening on our campuses.

Anything else you would like to say about your club:

If anyone is interested in joining our club, definitely reach out to Naomi or Rebecca, and we will send you a WhatsApp group chat link, as well as the Campus Groups link, so you can be notified of future fun events! We have had cool events in the past, like a laser tag trip at Bowlero, and a fun social event in Central Park with pizza and pick-up sports. We welcome any new members!
