After a tumultuous few months of rumors surrounding the shaky future of Yeshiva University’s Graduate Program in Advanced Talmudic Studies (GPATS), beloved Stern College professor Nechama Price has been hired to assume the role of director of the two-year masters program. An alumna of GPATS, Nechama Price’s new position comes as a reassurance to those who feared that the mission of the program would become blurred amongst the heated budget discussions.
In a statement to the Observer, Price reaffirms her commitment to continuing the high-quality learning that GPATS provides and hopes to channel the learning to shape the next generation of female leaders: “My hope is to have GPATS continue to educate women on an extremely high level in Gemara and Halacha, to give women the learning and leadership skills to play a major role in Am Yisrael. The skills gained in GPATS can help these women strive in roles of educators [both]formal and informal, Kallah teachers, yoatzot Halacha, or any profession.” Price holds leadership positions both within and outside the walls of YU. In addition to her new role in GPATS and teaching in Stern College, Price also serves as a Yoetzet Halacha in Teaneck, NJ.
Price also hopes to bridge the gap between the women of GPATS and Stern College students. “I also hope to find ways for the GPATS women to interact with the undergraduates of Stern College in a meaningful way that will benefit all sides involved. I am looking forwards to a wonderful year of teaching at Stern and directing the GPATS program.”
